How to open an MD file
What is an .md file?
An .md file is a plain-text document written in Markdown — a lightweight syntax for headings, lists, links and code. AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT often save answers or project notes as .md because it works in GitHub, editors and static sites without lock-in.
Open online (fastest)
On MarkdownBook, use Open file or paste the contents. You get a formatted preview, an outline and a mind map, then you can export PDF or Word. Nothing is uploaded.
Windows
- Right-click the file → Open with → Notepad or VS Code for raw text.
- For formatted reading, use this site or install a Markdown preview extension in VS Code.
Mac
- Open with TextEdit (plain text) or Typora / MacDown if installed.
- Or drag the file into MarkdownBook in any browser.
iPhone and Android
Mail and Files apps treat .md as text. To read with formatting, open MarkdownBook in the mobile browser, paste the text (or open the file), and switch to Preview — nothing is uploaded.
Got an .md from Claude or ChatGPT?
That file is usually documentation or an export of the answer. Open it here, check the outline, then export Word if you need to send it to someone who does not read Markdown.
FAQ
Is Markdown safe to open?
Yes — it is plain text. Be cautious with files from strangers the same way you would with any document that might contain links.
Can Microsoft Word open .md natively?
Word does not render Markdown well. Convert to DOCX with our MD to Word tool first.
